
Stop Wasting Power on Glass Annealing
Let’s be honest: glass annealing is a power hog. If you’re still relying on traditional resistive heating, you’re basically paying to heat up the entire room just to get the glass to the right temperature. It’s a waste. We do things differently. We use shortwave infrared (IR) lamps that aim straight for the bottle. Instead of warming up the air around the glass, the heat goes right into the material. It cuts down the time and the electric bill, and it gets those internal stresses relieved way faster. The nitty-gritty on power To get to those soaking temperatures quickly, we use high-wattage lamps. We lean toward high-voltage setups because it lowers the current draw per lamp. Why does that matter? It means you can pack more heating elements onto a single circuit without blowing a panel. You get a massive hit of concentrated heat, which means your ramp-up time disappears. One heads-up, though: this kind of energy density is tough on your equipment. If your reflector housings are dirty or pitted, that heat just bounces off and wastes away into the furnace walls. Keep them clean, or you’re throwing money away. Quartz, Halogen, and the Science Bit We build these tubes out of high-purity quartz. Inside, we use halogen cycles to stop the tungsten filament from evaporating too fast. It’s a simple trick that keeps the lamps from burning out every few weeks. Depending on the color of your bottles, we can add specific coatings to the quartz. This shifts the emission spectrum so the IR waves actually sink into the glass instead of just bouncing off the surface. And for the folks doing the actual install? We use standard R7s or Sk15 connectors. It makes the wiring a breeze when you’re in the middle of a teardown and just want to get things running again. Getting it onto the shop floor The best part is that these are drop-in replacements. You don’t need to rebuild your whole line. Once they’re in, you’ll notice the difference immediately. There’s no “thermal lag”—you turn them on, and they’re hot. Period. Your annual KWh usage will thank you. Just a word of caution: these tubes are fragile. If your conveyor system shakes or vibrates a lot, make sure your mounting clips are dampened. If you don’t, you’ll start seeing filaments snap, and that’s a headache nobody wants.
