
The Real Story Behind IP65 Sealing in Infrared Heaters
Here is the thing about IP65 ratings: they aren’t a magic shield. In the world of industrial heating, water isn’t your only problem. Heat is the real killer. When you’ve got a high-wattage infrared heater running, the spot where the lead wire enters the housing becomes a thermal bridge. If that seal isn’t spot-on, the insulation basically cooks itself.
Why those “standard” seals always quit
Most heaters you’ll find on the shelf use basic silicone or rubber grommets. They seem fine at first. But after a while of heating up and cooling down, those materials just give up. They crack. Once a tiny crack opens, moisture creeps in. That leads to carbonization, and before you know it, you’ve got a dead short. I see this all the time with cheap setups where the wire is basically just shoved into a hole and hoped for the best. To fix this, we move the sealing point away from the hottest part of the heater. We use high-temp fluorosilicone or ceramic potting compounds. It creates a tight, hermetic seal that doesn’t turn brittle after a thousand hours of hard work.
Doing it right vs. the “quick fix”
A lot of shops just slap a gasket on the outside and call it a day. That’s just a failure waiting to happen. We do things differently. We build the seal right into the wire jacket. By using a stepped-compression fit and adhesive-lined heat shrink, the seal becomes a physical part of the assembly. It’s mechanical, not just a layer of glue. This stops “wicking.” That’s when moisture actually travels inside the wire insulation. If you’re working in a humid environment, a bad seal means your wire will literally burn out from the inside out.
A quick heads-up on the trade-offs
Adding IP65 sealing does add some bulk to the connection point. You can’t just cram these into a tiny space without thinking about your airflow. If you bundle those lead wires too tightly, heat builds up. Even the best seal in the world can’t save insulation that’s being choked by its own heat. Give your cables some room to breathe. It’ll make everything last a lot longer.
