Getting the Power Right
We stick with short-wave infrared lamps for a reason: they’re fast. Like, really fast. Unlike those old resistive elements that stay hot long after you turn them off, an IR lamp stops the second you cut the power. But you can’t just use a standard switch. You need a high-speed SCR or a thyristor power controller to actually manage that speed. Here’s how it works in the real world. You modulate the power in real-time so the temperature climbs steadily without hitting that “breaking point.” If a sensor picks up a sudden spike on the surface, the controller dials back the wattage immediately. This keeps the outside from expanding too fast and ripping the core apart.
Mind the Gap
The distance between your lamp and the glass is everything. If the lamp is too close, you get “hot spots.” And hot spots mean shattered glass. It’s a simple math problem based on the lamp’s wattage and how thick your glass is. Sure, a tighter gap means you can push more product through the line. But you’re also narrowing your margin for error. It’s a constant tug-of-war between wanting a smaller machine footprint and not wanting to wake up to a tunnel full of shards.
The Hardware Headache
Here is the part people forget: rapid power cycling is brutal on your gear. If you use cheap relays, they’ll burn out fast under that kind of load. You need industrial-grade wiring and beefy heat sinks to keep your controllers from frying themselves. Plus, you’ve got to think about the air. If your cooling system can’t handle the ambient heat inside the tunnel, your electronics will start to drift. Once that happens, your temperature control goes out the window, and you’re back to square one.
